Anya clung desperately to Brenna’s hand, as she dragged the little girl though the network of secret passages and tunnel’s which lined the walls of the Dacre estate. Her husband as a paranoid creature it seemed and for once she was glad of it, even though it had been several minutes since she had been entirely sure where in the house they were.
Finding a trap door she heaved it open, a dark ladder disappeared beneath. ‘Down… did she really want to go down… down was into the basement… the basement… was underground. Was that really the place she wanted to go? She asked herself unable to remember if there was even an exit down there. Suddenly she remember Vincent’s chambers, no-where in the house would be more secure. “Come on” she urged, tugging on Brenna’s hand as she put her first step onto the ladder. Continue reading
“Did you get it” Anya asked nervously as she stood at the doorway to Brenna’s bedroom. In side the large solider barely looked up from where he was examining the paintwork.
“No” he replied, without looking up from his study “Nor am I in any mind too. I’m not sure what your thinkin of Milady but it can come to no good that im sure”
“But I offered to pay you” she protested, “Enough money that you can buy your self a house, live a free life”
Anya pushed the door open to the girls bedroom. Vincent had always told her to follow her gut, he said it was the single most powerful instinct humans had. She didn’t know why but something on this occasion told her all was not as it seemed.
Across the room she could see the blood scrawled words but what his her most powerfully was the smell.
Neither Raeanne nor her father had mention anything about a smell at yet the moment she had pushed the door open the stench had hit her most powerfully, it was a acrid like rotten meat.
“Good Morning Orrick” Valdermar smirked as the nobleman led is new ‘wife’ into the dining room for breakfast. Ailana seemed quiet, demur and somewhat nervous … as he supposed most young women felt on the morning after their wedding. “How was the room?” he asked, “Or more importantly how was the wife?”
“Val!” Holly exclaimed.
“What?!” her husband chuckled, “He should consider himself blessed we didn’t all pile into his room at the crack of dawn to make sure everything was as it should be” Continue reading
Holly watched as her two sisters fussed over Ailana, it was a strange thing to watch them preening over the young girl. The whole situation was odd and while everyone thought she was being so reasonable and brave but in truth part of her had wanted to see the girl up close, see if she could see what the Hamdun woman had that had made Thomas choose her.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” Ailana asked suddenly, looking directly towards her. Continue reading
“What in blazes are they doing back here?” Valdermar fumed as he watched Orrick getting out of the coach that had just pulled up outside his home. “Your father is determined to get me killed!”
“Actually” Holly replied cautiously. “I may have invited them”
“Oh Val!” she exclaimed, “You can’t expect that girl to spend her first night as a married woman in a dingy tavern” Continue reading
“Oh look at you” Raeanne exclaimed, seeing Anya for the first time. The bump of her stomach now clearly visible beneath her gown.
“You should not have come” Orrick warned sternly, “Not in your condition”
“Father I’m not an invalid” Anya smiled “Women have babies all the time”
“My daughters don’t” he chuckled moving to embrace her “Where is Vincent?”
“He’s away” she replied “But he offer’s you his best wishes. How are you Ailana?” the young woman asked finally turning to speak to her. Continue reading
