Asha Wakes

Asha groaned her whole body ached, the last thing she remembered was falling into the flames and the fire searing her skin.

Putting her hand to her face, the skin stung to the touch. Looking around she didn’t recognise where she was, it was a small well furnish room but revealed nothing about the owner.

Sitting she noticed she was dressed in a clean nightgown and she’d been washed. The fabric was soft and woven with tiny embroidered detail certainly not the clothing of peasants.

Cautiously she climbed from the bed, tip toeing slowly across the floor to the window. Looking out all she could see was hill for miles.  The only sign’s of habitation were a small cluster of farm buildings surrounding this one and sheep grazing on the hillside.

As she pondered trying to work out where exactly in Grimstead she was, if she was indeed still in Grimstead the door behind her opened.

“Mornin Milady” a female voice called, Asha span not accustomed to being called milady by anyone, to find a young blond girl in a simple woven frock standing smiling. “Yer awake I see, thought you where gonna sleep for an age we did”

“Where am i?” Asha asked nervously.

“Downsbrooke Farm” the young girl replied.

“Never heard of it”

The young girl smiled “would ye like some breakfast? Well lunch by my reckoning?” she grinned.

“How long have I been here?”

“A few days”

“How did I get here?”

“Der ya not remember?”

“No” Asha shook her head, “the last thing I remember was a bonfire”

“Aye Vincent told us about that. Terrible thing miss burning people shouldn’t be allowed… Them calling themselves civilised folk”

“Yes terrible… “ Asha replied feeling rather uncertain “Am I dead?” she asked.

A wide grin spread across the young girls face “Course not miss, did yer think this was Heaven or some thin”

“Crossed my mind” Asha admitted.

“Dunno about you miss, but by idea of heaven is much grander than this”

Asha managed a chuckle “Hell then?”

The girl scrunched up her nose and shook her head “Not enough flames”

Asha nodded “so who’s Vincent”

“You’ll find out” the girl giggled “He’ll be here by tea time, always is”

Asha nodded “What about my family?”

The girl shrugged “Vincent only bought you, best be askin him I reckon… come on then you must be starvin”

Asha followed the young girl nervously down the stair’s with no idea who her host was she took in as much about her surroundings as she could.

The house it’s self was a fairly typical farmstead, but the furnishing’s where of a higher quality indicating more wealth than the average farmer, perhaps a Yeoman she decided.

Entering the kitchen’s an old woman busied herself preparing food “Morning dear” she smiled seeing Asha enter.

“Morning” Asha replied nervously.

“Yer awake then I see” the older lady chuckled, “So what are you having for breakfast? Oats?

Asha nodded “Who owns this farm?” she asked “Is it this Vincent man you speak of?”

“Aye love! He’ll be here in a few hours don’t you fret”

“Do you know why he bought me here?”

“Said you where in a spot of bother that’s all” the old woman smiled “Wanted us to watch out fer yer till yer woke up”

“Did he tell you what sort of bother?” Asha asked cautiously.

“Don’t be stressing yer self pet, we ain’t the judgemental sort here, now eat up before it get’s cold” the woman smiled popping a bowl of oat’s on the table.

    YAAAAAY!!!

And Vincent — Vincent Bendett? But surely he would have told the king if he did that? (Or has he not had a chance, given his duties?)
