Long Jump

Left with few choices Deonte looked at the gap the chasm had narrowed here leaving a jump of around 15 feet.

That was one hell of a jump even at a run, however with the two beasts snarling their victory certain anything was better than letting them get hold of him, even if it meant a bloody death at the end of a long fall.

Deonte jogged forward towards the beasts hands outstretched, “ ok you win” he called “ I have no-where left to run”.

The first of the creatures smiled putting his weapon away he signalled to the second who ran forward to meet Deonte, but just as he reached the young boy Deonte turned breaking into a sprint using the last of his energy to power himself forward leaping the chasm.

Flying thought the air the young boy kicked out, almost trying to walk on the air his legs urging him forward, landing heavily there was a cracking noise and his legs gave way beneath him, leaving him sprawled on the floor.

Deonte rolled quickly onto his back a shooting pain ran up his right leg, broken for sure. The creature that had come out to meet him snarling on the other side, ran back towards his friend, and tried to follow Deonte over the gap, it ran and leapt but fell short, missing the ledge by inches it fell, clawing out desperately for something to hold onto as it fell.

It caught the bottom of Deonte’s trousers dragging him towards the edge of the ledge, Deonte slid, grasping out at the roots of a nearby tree, trying to prevent the beast from dragging him with it down into the chasm.

He desperately kicked out trying to shake the beast free, the tendon’s in his leg ripping apart with the weight of the creature. The creature clung on and began to climb using Deonte as a ladder.

The boy desperate to be rid of his attacker clung to his root with one hand, and picked up a branch from the floor with the other, swinging violently toward the beast he hit it again and again, but still the creature did not release its grip on Deonte’s leg.

Finally the beast hauled its great weight over the lip of the wall, releasing its grip on the boy’s leg it began to stand. Deonte acted quickly using the creature’s sudden vulnerability to kick it one last time in the stomach as it rose.

The creature grunted seemingly unhurt by the blow and for a moment Deonte thought the battle lost. But then the creature began to frantically wave its arms in an attempt to steady it’s self as the blow had been enough to unbalance the beast.

Deonte quickly kicked out again and this time the beast toppled backwards and into the chasm its screams could be heard until there was a loud crunch as the beast hit the rock floor.

Deonte out of breath and in a lot of pain stared over the chasm to the creature’s companion and for a moment he thought the second beast was about to attempt the leap, but instead it just lowered it’s head and walked away.

  1. Oh boy, I just hope Deonte still has enough power left in him to run for help. How will he do that on a broken leg?
